Chadar Trek

Walking on Frozen river of Zanskar is an ultimate experience for adventure lover. The traditional name of the trek is "Chadar trek" the frozen sheet, which was only way in and out for Zanskaris in winter when all other ways are closed due to heavy snow fall at high passes. Therefore, it had been trade route for centuries for Zanskari People. This is a trek into some of the most isolated yet inhabited regions in the Zanskar mountains, most notably the village of Lingshed.

Chadar Trekking

  • Upon arrival at Leh Airport you will met by our representative and transfer to Hotel for Check in. Complete day for rest and leisure to acclimatize.

Day 02: Excursion to monasteries

  • Post Breakfast we proceed for Indus Valley Monastery tour including Shey Palace, The ancient capital of Ladakh, Thiksey an impressive complex rising tier upon tier on a hill above the village, Hemis Gompa, the largest monastic foundation of Drukpa Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism, & Stok Palace Museum. Packed or Hot Lunch will be provided. Overnight at Hotel

Day 03: Drive to Chilling (2 hrs) and trek to Tilad Dho 3100m (4-5 hrs)

  • We leave from Leh early morning, descending to the Indus to its confluence with the Zanskar. A dirt road from here takes us to Chilling. It takes an hour or so to get into a comfortable rhythm to walk on ice. Our camp is on a sandy plateau near one of the many caves that are blackened by centuries of use by the fires of locals. Our porters use these caves to cook and sleep in, and many of them are slowly being turned into small huts by Zanskaris recruited by the Border Roads Organization to shelter the road workers as they come through here.

Day 04: Trek to Gyalpo camp 3170m (5-6 hrs)

  • After a warm breakfast, with plenty of hot tea or coffee, we will walk deeper into the Zanskar gorge. Hopefully our first days will be generally problem free, but we can, and will, encounter times when we have to cross icy water, or climb rock walls to avoid getting wet.

Chadar TrekkingDay 05: Trek to Dib Cave 3225m (5-6 hrs)

  • Today we pass incredible waterfalls on our left, normally frozen into aquamarine ice cliffs. The waterfalls were said to have come from a river given to local people who visited Tibet centuries ago to plead for water for their barren land. They were given a box which they were told they must open only on their return home. The curious Zanskaris were nearly home when one of them opened it; out jumped a tiny fish, and the river sprung from the ground high above here.

Day 06: Trek to Nyerak camp 3390m (3 hrs)

  • After 2 hrs walk we turn a corner, and there, high above the river, is the bridge that links the village of Nyerak with the rest of Ladakh during the summer. The village is far above our camp, but it’s worth climbing up to visit the picturesque Nyerak village.

Day 07: Trek to Dib Gongma 3400m (5-6 hrs)

  • A short walk will take us to Oma Chhu, steep walls and narrow stretches make for some challenging conditions, if we are lucky enough we can cross it without much problem. By days end, though, we will be camped at Dib Gongma that joins up with our summer Zanskar trek route high above. The spires of rock above us have to be seen to be believed.

Day 08: Trek to Pidmo (7 hrs)

  • We have a long day today. Walking on the ice at a wide and flat place for sometime we will leave the river, and probably walk in the snow to the right side of the river before reaching the village of Pidmo, where we will have cozy stove warmed rooms to sleep in.

Day 09: Trek to Zangla (5 hrs)

  • We descend and cross the Zanskar bridge, then slowly climb and traverse the wide plateau - that Gibraltar-like rock pinnacle in the distance is the fort above Zangla. Soon the main Himalayan barrier appears on the horizon, and you can make out Pishu over on the right. Then Zangla proper comes into view, sprawling below avalanche strewn slopes.

Day 10: Drive to Padum 3531m and visit Karsha Monastery

  • We will drive in the morning to Padum. Padum is the capital of Zanskar and a major trade center in the valley. In the afternoon we will drive to Karsha monastery, one of largest monasteries of the Gelukpa sect, founded around the 10th century A.D. and with 140 resident monks. It is situated on a hillside with an impressive view of the entire valley.

Day 11 - Day 14: Drive to Kilima (2 hrs) and trek to Lingshed Dho (5 hrs)-Chilling

  • We will spend the last four two days retracing our footsteps, and hoping that we will get back to Chilling without many river crossings. In fact the Chadar changes by the minute, and the colors and perspectives all change, and it is quicker downhill. We camp in different places.

Day 15: Drive from Chilling to Leh

  • The final day we drive from Chilling to Leh and spend the rest of the day at ease.

Day 16: Departure

  • Tour concludes. We thank you for your patronage and ensure a punctual transfer to Domestic Airport to catch the flight for your onward Destination.
